Sir David Davis Demands Answers on MoD Attempt to Gag Regimental Associations

Military chiefs demand regimental groups remove petition support despite 87,000 backing campaign against Operation Banner prosecutions

Conservative MP Sir David Davis has challenged the Ministry of Defence (MoD) over its apparent attempt to suppress support for a parliamentary petition.

The petition opposes legislation that would enable the prosecution of Northern Ireland veterans who served during Operation Banner, the British military campaign against terrorism in Northern Ireland.

The MoD issued a directive to all Regimental Associations stating:

"With immediate effect, could you please make sure all of your communications channels (including Twitter/X) remove any feeds relating to the NI Troubles Act announcement and any associated petitions. Further guidance will be sent to you from Hd A&S by COP this week to reiterate what is/is not acceptable to communicate and the apolitical stance we are expected to take."

While Regimental Associations receive MoD funding for secretarial positions, Associations vary in their specific activities and focus depending on the regiment's history, size, and the needs of its members, but they universally play a vital role in supporting veterans.

Defence Secretary John Healey MP claimed no prior knowledge of the directive and promised to investigate the matter.

The petition has gathered 87,171 signatures. Once it reaches 100,000, Parliament will consider it for debate.
