Why the knives are out for Hermer
Pressure grows on Starmer to turn terminator on embattled Attorney General, “Herminator”.
As Downing Street avoids questions about Lorder Hermer, Attorney General and weapon of mass distraction, getting the boot before the next election, the list of reasons for him doing so are growing:
Blocking Legislation: He is accused of delaying legislation due to his legalistic approach, which some perceive as obstructive.
International Law Emphasis: His belief in and adherence to international law hinders reforms that could promote economic growth and other government objectives.
Controversial Legal Cases: Criticism stems from his involvement in high-profile cases, such as representing individuals like a 9/11 terror attack plotter, Shamima Begum, and Gerry Adams, which has raised eyebrows and sparked public debate.
Handling of Chagos Islands Issue: His role in the handover of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius has been contentious and subject to criticism. Not helped by fresh turmoil after the architect of the deal, Pravind Jugnauth, Mauritius's former Prime Minister, was pulled in for questioning over alleged money laundering.
Professional Background and Ethics: Concerns have been raised about his previous legal clients and his refusal to declare financial interests, which breaks with conventions for former attorneys general.
Perception of Arrogance and Obstructionism: Some critics, including within his own party, view him as arrogant and overly progressive, believing that he prioritises legalism over political pragmatism.
Internal Government Criticism: Privately, some ministers have questioned his effectiveness and suitability for his role, suggesting dissatisfaction with his performance.
Hounding veterans: Decades of persecution of veterans who served with bravery and honour.
Despite these criticisms, he does have defenders, including his old supervisor from his chambers, Sir Keir Starmer, who will have to choose between supporting his mates and political pragmatism.
