Rebecca Smith MP Praises Special Forces Legacy in Westminster Debate
South West Devon MP backs judicial review of Clonoe inquest while honouring SAS hero Paddy Mayne
Speaking in Parliament during a debate (8/4/25) on the posthumous award of a Victoria Cross to SAS hero Paddy Mayne, Rebecca Smith MP highlighted the ongoing concerns about the treatment of Northern Ireland veterans.
"Whilst we stand here today celebrating the heroic actions of one SAS veteran, many veterans of that service are currently living in fear of vexatious legal action," Smith told the House of Commons.
During the debate, Smith noted how the word "leadership" was repeatedly emphasised by her fellow MPs when discussing Paddy Mayne's service. Reflecting on their tributes, she told the House she felt "quite inspired" by his example, citing their descriptions of him as "a leader of men" who "was born for that time."
Smith placed on record the Opposition's unwavering support for the special forces, noting that while operational secrecy must be maintained, "we sleep soundly knowing that we have such a highly trained and brave set of soldiers protecting the nation."
The South West Devon MP, who represents many serving personnel and veterans, took the opportunity to voice her support for the Minister for Veterans' stance on the recent Clonoe verdict. She specifically thanked the Minister "for his support for a judicial review of the Clonoe inquest."
Smith expressed hope that the Minister for Veterans' experience and judgment would be sought by colleagues in the Northern Ireland Office regarding plans to repeal the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023, emphasising that protecting veterans should carry unanimous support across Parliament.
As the representative for South West Devon, home to 42 Commando Royal Marines at RM Bickleigh, Smith continues to be a strong voice for military personnel and veterans' rights in Parliament. Her constituency responsibilities include representing many serving personnel and veterans who, as she noted in her speech, "take part in the most daring and dangerous missions."
Why do we see a MP coming out saying they support the veterans? I always find it suspicious when they come out. What the military need and veterans the same justice our alien have in the USA.
