Katie Lam MP: Listening to the People Who Lived the Troubles

The argument over Northern Ireland’s past is increasingly conducted through competing narratives: about what happened, why it happened, and who should now be held accountable.

In this new documentary for Outpost Studios, Katie Lam MP travels through Northern Ireland and listens to people whose experiences and perspectives differ profoundly. The film does not remove those disagreements. It puts them in the same frame and allows viewers to hear them for themselves.

The testimony of former members of the security forces is particularly important. Decisions made during the Troubles are now being examined decades later in courtrooms, inquiries and political debate.

Any serious assessment of those decisions has to understand the circumstances in which soldiers and police officers were actually operating — not merely how those circumstances appear with the benefit of hindsight.
